Francis Scott Key, a young lawyer and amateur poet witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during in September of 1814. The order came down to extinguish all lights in the Fort and in all of Baltimore so the British could not aim at any source. It was not until the dawn, before Francis could see if our flag still waved above the fort.
