I wish I had her at my tea party. Our speakers were okay, but they definitely were not as enthusiastic as the rest of us due to them being government workers.
ObamaandFreinds.... The discussion underway on this website was one of policy, one of battling ideas and concepts, between ideologies that all hope to advance the country, despite whichever flaws they may bare respectively. Your is only a a petulant, sad pockmark on the face of a discussion which formerly bore integrity. It has no valid political points, doesn't touch on any administrations policies, and is a vapid and pointless "what if" based on the raising of a dead former president. Someone who cant think? the only person who has demonstrated their inability to think, is you, who has entered the discussion with childish, empty comments baring no standing in a grown up debate.
The real Thomas Jefferson would verbally denigrate the TJ here, to the point that he would be unable to speak or come out from under his rock for fear of being mocked. If even Obama knows he's full of crap...who doesn't? It's pointless to argue with people that can't think.
TJ doesn't think leftism is a religion because he knows the folly of letting an ideology rule your life (central planning) or giving your life over to a higher power (State/the People). Sadly, that's exactly what leftism is.
And leftism is faith based in that it is a theory. It is the pursuit of heaven. (on earth) ironically atheists don't believe in heaven but they pursue it on earth. then make others suffer in their pursuit of a place that doesn't exist. in their opinion, a worthy sacrifice for paradise. (a term used by Castro and Chavez)
By contrast, right wingers are individualists who reject central planning. The most ungodly thing one can do is put a cap on what a human can achieve or force him to live for the sole benefit of another. that is slavery. that is leftism.
Leftism is a religion. the political-economic theory that an all-controlling central authority will be controlled by non-corrupt non-self-interested people who will determine the actions of all other people and the industries/companies that there are (be they private or public owned) and that people even have the capability of doing this well, and that all other people will willingly comply with such commands for the good of society no matter what their personal desires are and that this monster of a society will actually function requires a lot more faith than any Christian needs to believe in Jesus. And of course there's a difference between "liberals" today and classical liberals. The "liberals" today are anything but liberal. They are opposed to true liberalism. "Obama's life was picked apart by his press" If this is true... can you name the person or persons most responsible for Barack's meeting his future wife, Michelle? Don't look it up...if the press did what you said they did. you should know. And I laugh at the stupidity of this 1: "That is not America, we do not embrace mod rule" vs 2: " the fact of the matter is he is our democratically elected president, the majority (a far greater one than Bush ever had)of Americans voted Obama to be our president, and so its time for the GOP to bite their tongue for four years and show enough patriotism to move the country forward, not keep it in a state of stagnant political dissidence." A great political mind once said: I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration, somehow you’re not patriotic, and we should stand up and say, WE ARE AMERICANS AND WE HAVE A RIGHT TO DEBATE AND DISAGREE WITH ANY ADMINISTRATION! I agree with her. no wonder they say she's so smart.
Thomas Talionis is right, this debate is futile (like most political debates). So to cap it all off, for my part at least, let me say their is a distinction between classical liberalism and that of today. Recall that American's were disgusted by the actions of the French during their revolution. That is not America, we do not embrace mod rule and we are not fascists, no matter what regime, unless the people dictate a referendum for fascism. religion noun the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods : ideas about the relationship between science and religion. - details of belief as taught or discussed : when the school first opened they taught only religion, Italian, and mathematics. - a particular system of faith and worship : the world's great religions. - a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance : consumerism is the new religion. That is the standard American definition of religion. Leftism, excluding the last definition, is not a religion. And so according to the last standard, politics is a religion too. That which is based on faith is not a religion, in fact that is a gross oversimplification of varying components of theology. Obama's life was picked apart by his press... you are right, it is ALL well documented. Everything down to his preacher, his interactions with Ayers, and his unfortunately ignorant preacher. All, as I said before, are irrelevant. Dislike him, hate him, burn the flag if you so please... but the fact of the matter is he is our democratically elected president, the majority (a far greater one than Bush ever had) of Americans voted Obama to be our president, and so its time for the GOP to bite their tongue for four years and show enough patriotism to move the country forward, not keep it in a state of stagnant political dissidence.
When Ron Paul isn't allowed to read the spending bill before voting on it, that is taxation without representation. Leftism is a religion. And it is based on faith, not the empirical as we see in Austrian Economics. (see Ron Paul and Peter Schiff for examples)
Obama's use of 'middle class, hope and change' was a specific strategy created by Saul Alinsky to create class warfare. For proof, read his book Rules for Radicals. Your beliefs regarding equal rights speaks for themselves.
As much as I hate to prolong this futile debate, Obama is a sham. He consistently voted against regulating fannie and freedie while accepting more money in 3 years than any other senator over a 20 year period from them. Former fannie ceo Jim Johnson was also his senior advisor who resigned when the subprime market collapsed. He walked away with millions. Obama's name is one several lawsuits against lending institutions. It is well documented. as are his connections to william ayers, saul alinsky and ACORN. Obama's regime is not new. they are the same old players, playing the same old game.
Using the Radical Republicans as an example of noble bipartisanship is just fatuous. Were the radical republicans more dedicated to the advancements of blank civil rights during reconstruction? Undoubtedly. However, extreme views rarely make change in America. John Brown was also greatly committed to the abolition of slavery, and of corse, he got nothing done. Moderation is needed in the Democratic system, thats what the moderate Republican's of 1860's and 1870's displayed in order to weld the south back to the north, and it worked.
Middle Class, hope, and change are wrong in what way? Certainly if they pander or insight anguish in the people in order to mobilize them, similar techniques were used by the Bush administration with the disgracefully-labeled Patriot Act, war on terror, and raising the terror alert to red every first monday of the month. Bush, the head of the GOP for 8 years, had the lowest approval ratings since Nixon because of the putrid relationship he developed with the American people based on lies (false pertness for a war ECT), but its Obama's word that are the problem?
Leftism is not a religion. American liberalism is not the classical Leftism found in the French Revolution, don't conflate the two.
And conspiracy theories of Obama's past including ACORN and his preacher and nothing more than slanderous attempts to denigrate the president. They are not only unconfirmed at best, they are irrelevant. Chenney was under investigation for profiteering of the Iraq war, and Bush's business and oil connections were seriously called into questions, however like Obama's history as a lawyer, are irrelivant to their policy, if only because our knowldge and action on the subject is greatly limited.
No, politics is not a game, but Fox News and the GOP should realize the election of Obama and sweeping Democratic victories around the country are a referendum for change, and just becasue they did not win the election, that is not taxation without representation and certainly not tyranny.
To anyone who wonders why the abolition of slavery wasn't in the constitution, you can thank the illogical notion of bipartisanship. it's only logical if you care more about winning an election than doing what is right.
If the left is the vanguard of individual liberties, where did the fairness doctrine come from? or political correctness? or social advancement? right to work? who opposes the voucher program? cap on executive pay? racial quotas? subprime loan quotas?
Bonus: As a young lawyer, Barack Obama (with ACORN) sued Citigroup among other banks, accusing them of redlining (racism), he forced them to give x amount of subprime loans. That was the same ACORN that committed mass voter fraud to help get him elected and is now eligible for 'bail-out' funds.
I said, 'the entity known as religion is any ideology or belief of the utmost importance.' My point being; Leftism is a religion.
Historically, most evils were voted into power. Historically, class warfare has been used to tip the scales. How many times did Obama say 'middle class?' FYI, that is a Saul Alinsky technique. So are the words 'hope' and 'change.' Alinsky also mentored Cloward and Piven and Miss Hillary Clinton. Obama is a man with an agenda. We don't like it.
And since you brought up the civil war, did you know that Lincoln didn't get the Republican nomination for his re-election? That is because the true republicans wouldn't pander to the majority. They demanded full and equal rights for all. No exceptions. They were called 'Radical Republicans.' They refused to be bipartisan. What followed was 100 years of inequality. Why? to win elections. Listen to the end of Pia's speech again.
First. The entity known as religion is of the utmost importance? Religion is the most pestilential, disgraceful institution that remains today. The fact that the gross majority of American's believe in religion, and even worse, biblical literalism, is nothing short of obscene.
Second. To call the current administration Statism is laughable. If you think what Obama is doing now, which in all honesty is nothing compared to the vast exploits of FDR and Andrew Jackson, is the advancement of the state, then thats another instance. However, that is not the problem with the arguments laid out on the page, its the gross exaggeration of policies enforced by the democratic government. A political party that this country voted into power. The idiotic tea parties protesting with signs taxation without representation is indicative of the ludicrous arguments of Hannity, Levin, not-so-bad O'rielly, and the anti christ Rush. Representation does not mean that your party always wins or that your policies are enacted, it means that you have a vote and a congressperson to complain to if you so choose. Tea parties are a mockery of actual oppression, of an actual lack representation of, not uppity American's who whine about the fiscal policies of a regime which has barley got off the ground. The left in THIS country is the protector of individual liberties. Perhaps the extremism of general liberalism elsewhere may be fascismand certainly the extremes of the right are anarchy (as o'riely never fails to mention), but those ideologies are irrelevant. And the democratic prerogative is not to say let us do what we want because your racist. However, it is to say "allow us the bipartisanship and decency of performing the job that you, the citizens of this country, voted us in to do." The conservatives have shown a pathetic, querulous display of political stubbornness in the face of a regime elected by the majority. The last time a regime was so pig headed they were actually called the Democrats, and they met in South Carolina in 1860 to make a big decision, one which cost the lives 600,000 Americans and ended up with the shambles of a confederacy five years later.
It's hard to have an ideological discussion when no one understands the terms. the term Statist seems pretty straight forward tho. It's interesting that the 'Statists' are the ones insisting that these tea parties are only about a small tax increase.
Don't you all think it's more about ideology? These are protests against Statism; the advancement of the State. Forget the tax, Obama is making more and more people depend on the State for their jobs. don't you think that will decide how you vote? he's nationalizing the largest corporations on earth. He's setting pay limits. He's destroying the dollar. He's spending more than every President in our history combined including Bush. His budget calls for 8% inflation EVERY YEAR. He won't allow companies to pay back their bail-out $ because he wants to maintain control of them. bail out money is unaccounted for. bail out money was laundered to foreign companies thru AIG and others.
And it's interesting that he went to Columbia while Cloward and Piven were professors. Google Cloward-Piven Strategy and tell me if it seems similar to what Obama is doing.
I say 'true to leftist form' because that's what it means to be a leftist; forcing your beliefs on people because it's the best thing for everyone. (in the leftists opinion) You may have heard the term Islamo-fascist. It comes from that combination. I know what you're going to say and, yes, christians can do that too. However, it's still Leftism.
The extreme Right Wing is anarchy, from the greek meaning 'no rulers.' And you missed one element in the financial crisis. The government under Clinton forcing banks to give subprime loans in the benevolent name of increasing homeownership. How can you be against that? The gov guaranteed the loans thru fannie and freddie. Now we're getting the bill. In a nutshell.
It is the perfect example of fascist economics. the combination of corporate and state power. This is why the Statists perpetuate the stereotype the Right Wing stands for racism and homophobia. Basically they are saying 'let us do what we want or you're a racist.'
You are confusing the adjective 'conservative' with the pronoun 'Conservative.' See my Bruce Lee videos. You are seeing so many Christians on the political Right because religion CAN NOT exist on the Left. example: any communist country. true leftism puts the State above all else.
Your assessment of Conservatism is composed of stereotypes. It's like watching the news and see young black males rob, rape and steal and coming to the conclusion that that's what a young black man is.
Racism is a collectivist mentality. Right Wingers are individualists. You can't be a racist and a true right winger. The day you think collectively is the day you cease to be a right winger. It's like a vegetarian eating meat. You ain't a vegetarian anymore. Also, you will see hardcore christians support right wingers because they don't want to pay higher taxes.
the entity known as religion is any ideology or belief of the utmost importance. And let us not forget that extreme socialism/communism/fascism or Leftism is the most devastating religion the world will ever know.
Incorrect. I, of corse, would not like to take away free practices of any kind. I merely meant with the word 'unfortunately' that specifying religion as an entity in and of itself gives the religious right in this country cause for speculating that america is a religious or Christian nation, which it is ABSOLUTELY not.
Other than that...come on, true to the leftest position. The conservatives in this country are generally the ignorant, homophobic, racists. They are the religious protestors who hold up "faggots go to hell", who vote to ban gay marriage, and who support the war in Iraq because George Bush's foreign policy consist of advice given to him by god.
The left in this country are the protectors of civil liberties... hence the ACLU is dominated by Democrats and leftists.
I can tell by TJ's last remark that, true to Leftist form, he would like to take away the individual's right to religion in the name of uniformity. If we're all the same we'll have nothing to fight about. The unfortunate thing is that there are nations in which that mindset prevails. The atrocities ensue.
Pluribus, we do agree that the country should not be in debt. However the government did not PUT us into debt. The avaricious citizen who takes a morgage with no money down, with no practical intentions of being able to pay it back, and the corporations that offer the ridiculously low rates, and then packeges the debt and sells them, thats who is putting the country in debt. A 3% hike in the income tax is not putting people in debt. And certainly cutting taxes and allowing people an extra sliver of their paychecks will not stimulate the economy. Not only will be people by less inclined to spend the money with almost no consumer confidence, but it would be only marginal in the scheme of our trillion dollar economy, even on a mass scale.
And yes, unfortunately religion is given free reign in the free exercise clause.
You are correct, Pluribus. The first amendment specifically guards freedom of religion and 'the free exercise thereof.' the phrase 'separation of church and state' is in the bill of rights. Although often misunderstood as meaning freedom FROM religion. to that extent, Jefferson included the 'Letter to the Baptists at Danbury' to make sure no one took the phrase out of context.
It was certainly to prevent the state from forcing a church of england type establishment on the people. Not a condemnation or abolishment of religion.
Amitabh Bachchan, please tell me where in the Founding documents there's "that church and state thing." Last I read them, there's only a freedom from religion, i.e., an established state religion like the Church of England.
It seems we all can agree that the government shouldn't be putting us into debt and that the individual's rights shouldn't be infringed upon by the government, which includes property rights.
I guess we'll be seeing Thomas Jefferson at the next tea party.
Debt isn't the government's problem? That's their strategy.
What we learn from Shay's Rebellion is that the role of government is to protect our individual rights and like you said that includes property rights.
de Tocqueville knew that in order to sustain a democracy, individuals must be financially independent from the state and the state MUST be financially independent of other nations. That is the only true stability. Not crossing your fingers and begging the chinese to keep buying our debt.
Shay's Rebellion? the one started because of high debt and high taxes? That one? You're seeing a similar rebellion minus the violence.
I've said before, the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money. Europe, UK in particular, have hit rock bottom because no one is buying their debt. Should we follow their model? eventually the chinese will want the debt to be paid. (see shays rebellion) The great depression was also initiated by debts being called. NO MORE DEBT!!!
Where would they go when they need healthcare? Where are the tens of thousands of Americans supposed to go in this country that cannot afford health care? Who got labeled as having 'pre existing conditions' for 50% of illnesses. There is no doubt the person making this speech is wealthy, and thus less likely to empathize with the struggle of American's who fight to pay their incredibly high medical bills- with or without insurance. Yes, de Tocqueville said this with respect to the individual being a separate financial entity from the government. However, without economic stability a democracy itself cannot exist. Looks at the classic example, Shays' Rebellion. It serves as proof that without the government protection of, ironically enough for this debate, personal property, and a stable financial system, Democracy breaks down.
The idea behind the New Deal was NOT to increase spending. FDR thought the problem with the economy was competition. He believed industry should be 'bundled' together to avoid the evils of competition such as low prices and low wages. Note: Fascio (fascism) means bundle in italian.
Inflation would bring the price of goods up and in theory, wages. That's why there was massive government spending. Whereas in Zimbabwe and Venezeula, inflation is a mystery to them. To FDR it was an economic tool.
We were left in a depression for another 7 years because of those policies. Regulations weren't to prevent capitalists from scamming the people, they were to keep corporations in line. Mussolini called fascism, corporatism for this reason. FDR agreed with Mussolini for this reason. WW2 stopped those plans because FDR couldn't continue to hinder the economy.
Like I said, too bad the Quakers were pacifists. Economic security is NOT the cornerstone of democracy. Quite the opposite. As de Tocqueville said in Democracy in America, economic independence as individuals and as a nation are the key to preserving liberty. dependance leads to serfdom.
In case you didn't notice, we just had an expensive war. by your logic our economy should be booming. FDR prolonged the depression by taking money out of the people's hands. And we could borrow Europe's healthcare policies but then where would they go when they actually need healthcare?
The Quakers were the first abolitionists? They didn't get much done. Religion was on both sides of the Mason Dixon line as well, justifying and censuring slavery alike.
Too big to fail is a legitimate economic argument. It is not, as many republican's would label it, a partisan principle. Economic security is the cornerstone of democracy. The simultaneous foreclosure of banks, collapse of the housing market, and death of the auto industry would throw America right back into the pit of the 1929 depression...though at least we'd still be American, ey? Not like those damned European socialists. (who ironically we are allowed to borrow our governing philosophies, food, culture, literature, art, and religion from...though not their healthcare policies. Peculiar)
And as for FDR... his policies ended the great depression. Did he do it with the new deal? Perhaps not. It was WW II that jump started the American economy. Though in the end of the day, WW II was not some celestial economic viagra, it was merely a medium of mass government spending... the goal of the original New Deal
To the Democrats opposing individualism and private property debate, i would like to add racial quotas, right to work, executive pay limits, the tax code, trade unionism, the public school system, 1st amendment (freedom of religion), 2nd amendment, fairness doctrine, the death tax and potato day.
And since Andrew Jackson is the founder of the modern Democratic Party I should mention the Trail of Tears. Fun Fact: That's where you get the Jackass logo. Stubborn Jackson's nickname, defying the supreme court and forcing the Cherokee out of their land. Rejecting both individualism and property rights.
The alien and sedition act sounds like the homeland security report demonizing the right wing. Statists marginalizing those who oppose State dominance. Sounds like V for Vendetta too.
I just uploaded a trailer for the upcoming documentary on 'The Garden' in south central los angeles. It will show you what Democrats (Dennis Kucinich) think of property rights.
Those fundamentalist Quakers were the first abolitionists. Too bad they were pacifists. Saying the founders of our country were Separatists is a bit redundant.
Anytime favors are obtained from the government it is Socialism. It doesn't matter if the recipient is poor or wealthy. Socialists take one individual's property (money, land etc) and give it to another.
You can't honestly tell me that the democratic party doesn't put the collective good above the individual. That's the basis of 'too big to fail.' It's also how the Statists were able to seize 2 of the largest corporations on earth. That is the essence of fascist economics, combining corporate power with the state as Talionis pointed out. That is why FDR said the Italians could benefit from Fascism. The ideology was close in line with his. (it didn't have the stigma yet)
Lastly, to repeat myself, the alien and sedition act was ruled unconstitutional so i don't know what you're harping on. I'm looking down at my comment and i didn't write anything about voting.
A follower of Thomas Jefferson, though a fervent atheist and secularist, can admit that the early inhabitants of the country were religious fundamentalists... i.e. the Puritans, Separatists, and Quakers. Nonetheless, these groups may be mutually exclusive with the political foundation of modern day America, founded on the secular declaration of independence and constitution.
> Kato_Institute
How have property rights or individualism been even touched by the Democratic party. Is a 3% increase in the income tax socialism? If so, the Republican's of the past are in trouble. As for the Alien and Sedition acts....you claim that we should not have let the French influence our laws? The Sedition acts stated citizens could be subjects to fines and prison time if they slandered the government, and the Alien acts stipulated that the president could deport foreigners deemed "dangerous". So, in any event, the Alien and Sedition acts didn't even come close to the realm of anything that resembles voting. Pretending it HAD involved voting, if a foreigner is a citizen, in a war with their native country or not, they have every right to influence the laws of this country. One man, One vote.
There is a reason she was introduced as a 'leader of the republi-tarian movement.' There are to many sell-outs in the republican party. They've been corrupted by the power of statism. Also, I like the nickname, 'The Liberty Belle'
Regarding the founding of our country, and tell me if this sounds familiar . . .
The East India Company, which was too big to fail, was hurting badly due to a changing economy. The company pleaded with the British Parliament for a 'bail-out' for lack of a better term. The Brits agreed by partially nationalizing the company and levying 'regulations.' Combining corporate power with the State, Parliament passed the Tea Act to stimulate the company.
What happened next in the Boston Harbor was known as a Tea Party. And if you're curious, those regulations and mounting liabilities eventually bankrupted the East India Co.
I don't understand how an alleged follower of Thomas Jefferson can think America was founded by religious fundamentalists. He wrote that church and state thing. He was also down with the brown.
There is difference between pandering and passion. I wish we could agree if American was founded as a Christian nation or a secular republic with specific safeguards separating church and state.
I also wish we could agree that slavery in America existed nearly 300 years before there was a United States. The Alien and Sedition Act was enacted because of an impending war with France and it didn't make sense to allow France to influence our laws. (or any foreign power) It was ruled unconstitutional 2 years later.
I would argue that our country was founded on individualism and property rights. Both have been 'raped' as you put it, by the democratic (socialist) party.
So, because totalitarians have misused certain words, we (conservatives, libertarians, and independents alike) have to censors ourselves? Perhaps you should give Pia a list of all the words she can't use in public, I'd like to read that list.
Pia, Varma Very impressive speech. Harsh pronunciation, emphasis on the right words, and gesticulating to rally the crowd... ironic from the woman preaching against, as you say, "appealing to mans emotion rather than his reason". One who was appealing to reason might not say, "send a warning loud and clear...that we are not going to sit idly by...as our fair republic...comes crumbling down". In fact, such dramatic dialect and powerful speaking has been scene elsewhere, in the totalitarian states you warn us against.
You talk about America being a beacon of civil liberties that "no majority can vote away". Well, as you may recall, America was not built on such a foundation. The country was built by religious fundamentalists (the puritans and separatists), a slave based economy, and the subjugation of both women and often foreigners (repeated Alien and Sedition Acts).
You said that "freedom is more important than temporary security". Shocking coming from a conservative. Do you recall the Bush administrations illegal wire taps, secret and above-the-law, beyond-America-jurisdiction prisons in Cuba. Do you recall the false pretenses for going to war against Iraq. I believe the justifications for all of the above was "security". Your ideal is a noble one, though is dripping with irony coming from the mouth of a member of the GOP, the party that has raped the constitution and spat on Geneva convention.
Lastly, "God save America". Seems, amongst the paranoid ramblings of a socialist America you strayed far from your Thomas Jefferson-esk ideals. "My opinion is that there would never have been an infidel, if there had never been a priest. The artificial structures they have built on the purest of all moral systems, for the purpose of deriving from it pence and power, revolts those who think for themselves, and who read in that system only what is really there." - Thomas Jefferson.

religion noun
the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods : ideas about the relationship between science and religion.
- details of belief as taught or discussed : when the school first opened they taught only religion, Italian, and mathematics.
- a particular system of faith and worship : the world's great religions.
- a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance : consumerism is the new religion.

No, politics is not a game, but Fox News and the GOP should realize the election of Obama and sweeping Democratic victories around the country are a referendum for change, and just becasue they did not win the election, that is not taxation without representation and certainly not tyranny.
Some people think politics are like sports and we're just mad because 'our team' lost. It's a little more important than that. A little more at stake.
And yes, the semantics of Shay's rebellion are ironic here but the general point was the necessity of a stable economy
And I like the salute at the end, too.
And I too love the salute at the end.

Note: The Tea Act was an act of Protectionism.
Also Note: Pia Varma Rocks.
Mr. Jefferson,
There is difference between pandering and passion.
Very impressive speech.
